Air Defense Jobs: 14J & 14T

I was a 14J, Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator/Maintainer. That meant I maintained computers, wrote battery reports and made coffee for the command post crew. I had to pass valuable data between my battery and the battalion HQ. 14J’s are found in Short Range Air Defense units. (SHORAD), High to Medium Air Defense (HIMAD) and now THAAD.

Here is an Army video about MOS 14J:

Yes, long hours in the field. The radar in the video is a Sentinel. It’s a short range radar.

While 14E’s fire the patriot missiles, we cannot do our job with out the 14T. These “launcher dogs” climb in, up, on and around the launcher. They make sure that it works. They have to be up close and personal will several thousand pounds of high explosives and rocket propellant. A “hot crew” of 5-10 of them is always on duty, ready to fix any problems that crop up.

14T PATRIOT Launching Station Enhanced Operator/Maintainer:

The SHORAD counter part to the 14T is the 14S. They operate the Avenger. It is a HMMWV with stingers.

The Army used to have Bradley Linebackers. The crewmembers were 14R’s. The Linebackers have been pulled from service, many of the 14R’s either left the army or have new jobs. The Avenger has taken over the Linebacker’s job.
